Sifainge Co-operative(SIFCO)

The sole purpose of Sifainge Co-operative is to develop welfare facilities, increase social support and contribute to the welfare fund. The company’s strategic approach to increase the wellness was achieved through the development of its businesses.

It has been documented that trading amongst and within the soldiers of Maldives National Defence Force existed even before the 1950s. Soldiers traded tobacco, razors, blades and other essential goods, as it was difficult for them to purchase these from outside while on duty.

History shows that the first managers of these small establishments were Ranvikkaa Dhonkalayfaanu, Feridhoo Dhonthuththu and Mohamed Haaji Dhonthuththu.

The name Kaaki was given to this business, as this was the color of the uniform that they used. Individual shares were sold at MVR 10/- per share for those interested. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir bought back all the shares in 1960s and registered a company called “Sifainge Ekuveri Kunfuni” which later became a household name “SEK”, of which all the serving personnel were declared as shareholders. Prime Minister himself was the first Chairman of the company and, trading on a systematic method followed this change.

Real-estate

Until recently, real-estate business has been a small portion of the company’s business model. However, with the inauguration of “MNDF Housing Units” the approach towards real-estate has been strategically changed. The project is directly linked to the livelihood of 300 families. Therefore, managing the construction of such an immense project under the later pressure was a challenging venture.

With limited knowledge and technical strength within the company, the project was outsourced and followed through in all stages of the project. The process of managing construction related elements had given the company additional knowledge and created a wider opportunity to carry on such projects in the future.
