The number of recruits for each year is predetermined by the President’s Office and the Ministry of Defence and National Security with the assistance of the Office of the Chief of Staff.

When the advertisements seeking for potential recruits appears in the media, interested candidates can submit their “expression of interest” to the Ministry of Defence and National Security.

The Ministry of Defence and National Security shall notify the time and place of interview for those who had expressed their interest. Those who do not qualify the current basic entry criteria, however, shall not be called for an interview.

Basic Entry Criteria for Maldives National Defence Force
  1. Candidate must have completed GCE Ordinary Level or Grade 10
  2. Candidate must have a minimum height of 5’ 5” (males) or 5’ 3” (females)
  3. Candidate must be between 18 and 28 years of age
First Interview

The initial interview for potential recruits will assess:

  1. The basic entry criteria
  2. Academic results
  3. The level of religious awareness in addition to the candidate’s conduct mentioned in the School Leaving Certificate
  4. Whether the candidate suffers from any disability, physical shortcoming or a serious medical condition

Certificates of academic qualifications submitted during the first interview must be attested by the Department of Public Examinations.

Candidates who fail the first interview will be notified accordingly in writing. Those who pass the interview will be offered the opportunity to partake in the following compulsory tests for all new recruits:

  1. Aptitude test
  2. Physical test
Aptitude Test

The aptitude test seeks to determine the aptitude (intelligence) and general knowledge of potential recruits.

Physical Test

The physical test seeks to determine the level of physical fitness of potential recruits. Components of the physical test include:

  1. Sit-ups
  2. Pull-ups
  3. Push-ups
  4. Running
  5. Swimming

There is no set pass mark for either test. However, the points obtained from the tests will be considered during the selection process.

Second Interview

Candidates to be sent for a medical examination will be determined after taking into account the results obtained in the aptitude test, physical test and O’Level or A’Level results. The medical examination will be conducted at the MNDF Medical Services. In addition, like any other potential government employee, candidates will be asked to complete the obligatory “History of Criminal Record Form.”

Candidates who fail the second interview will be notified accordingly in writing. The same procedure applies to “medically unfit” candidates and those with criminal records.

Final Selection

If the number of candidates who pass the second interview exceed the available slots, the candidates will be re-interviewed, and the medical report and criminal record form reassessed in order to select new recruits.

Obtaining a MNDF Identity Card, Preparing a Record File, Opening a Bank Account, and Opening an SEK Account

Once the selected recruits have been inducted to the organization, they will be provided with the MNDF Identification Card. A Staff Record File for each candidate will also be prepared by the Human Resource Department. Necessary arrangements will be made to deposit their salaries directly to their bank accounts. Further, their SEK accounts will be opened during this stage.

Basic Training

Once the administrative procedures outlined above have been completed, candidates will be forwarded to the Defence Institute for Training and Education to complete their basic training.

Allocating Recruits to Units

Recruits who do not pass the basic training will be given the opportunity to redo the training. Those who successfully complete the basic training will be allocated to different units by the Office of the Chief of Staff. New staff recruitment procedure comes to an end once they have been assigned to units.
