Lieutenant Colonel Anwar Zahir is currently appointed as the deputy commander of Central Area. He joined the Maldives National Defence Force on 21st May 1996.

In his 24 years of long dedicated service, he has held numerous operational functions both ashore and at sea. His first command appointment was the command of the 20 meter Coast Guard Fast Attack Craft ‘Kaani’. While holding the appointment of Base Commander Regional Head Quarters Lh. Madivaru in the year 2004, he experienced Asia’s worst struck tsunami in December. Lieutenant Colonel Anwar Zahir served as the head of Coast Guard Fleet Operations MNDF Male’ Area and Coast Guard Search and Rescue Operations Center in 2007, where intense maritime Search and Rescue missions were undertaken and a number of lives were saved. Later in 2010, he was appointed as the Coast Guard Squadron Commander MNDF Southern Area and exercised his responsibility in establishing plans and procedures and implementing them as necessitated to the fulfilment of the Area Command’s mission.

Subsequently, Lieutenant Colonel Anwar Zahir was appointed as the Officer Commanding of Coast Guard Training School on 13th March 2011. During this tenure, he played an important role in identifying fleet training needs, designing, developing and planning programmes to maintain the preparedness and inclination of the Coast Guard work force, fabricating and delivering Coast Guard training policy guidance to the fleet and providing further assistance to the leadership of the Coast Guard in relation to all fleet training matters.

Lieutenant Colonel Anwar Zahir underwent “Graduate Special Entry Scheme”, a naval officer training programme in the Indian Naval Academy, from July 1999 to March 2003 and graduated with a full Naval Watch-Keeping Certificate. He completed International Maritime Officer Course in United State Coast Guard Training Centre, York Town, Virginia in 2007 and also underwent Criminal Intelligence Analytical Training in Nairobi, Kenya in 2011.Later, in the year 2012 he completed Junior Staff College in Nanjing, China. He is also a specialized navigator who was trained in the Navigation and Direction School of Indian Navy, Kochi. Furthermore, he is a graduate of Defence Service Staff College, Wellington, India, where he completed his Defence Service Staff Course in the year 2017.

The highlights of his career include his active participation in many streamlining efforts of the MNDF Coast Guard into modernisation and proficiency. He has represented MNDF Coast Guard in many maritime related seminars and meetings both in Maldives and in foreign countries.

He is married and blessed with a daughter and a son.
